Two booth seats and tables by the window overlook the colourful street, and there is another small table set for two in a little corner. There are no seats at the bar, just a large counter more in common with an apartment than a food and beverage venue. We had that odd sensation of having time travelled, to a simpler time in Asia. Quite the refreshing change from the western music played everywhere else and from the buskers on the street outside who can still be heard. The playlist has everything from P Ramlee and Poon Sow Keng to very old Bollywood hits. Asian music from the early 1900s plays gaily over the speakers.
#Hidden bar bandung full
The bar has warm but dim lighting, and shelves full of curiosities and potion-like concoctions in odd looking jars. Persevere and when you reach the top of the stairs, you will be greeted by shelves of antiques and the scent of incense, more reminiscent of a Hindu temple than a cocktail bar. A quaint little place with a discreet signboard look for Bergs Burgers, and head straight up the short flight of stairs to the second floor.Īt first glance, the stairwell leading up to the bar looks like the stairway to an attic for grain storage. You might miss it if you are not looking for it. Oriental Elixir is at 10 Haji Lane, on the second level. We heard that a brand new, elusive one had opened just a couple of months ago and made a trip to hunt down this mysterious new venue.

Hidden amongst these preserved, heritage double storey shophouses are some really cosy cocktail bars like Bar Stories. As evening falls, buskers emerge to belt out hits old and new, adding to the vibrant atmosphere and rendering Haji Lane a melting pot of the cultural diversity unique to Singapore. There are throngs of visitors, tourists and locals alike, snapping photos to the backdrop of colourful bursts of graffiti that line the walls of the lane. Stroll down Haji Lane and you'll notice a vast variety of stores selling everything from drinkable coffee printed with your selfie in milk foam to traditional rattan bags.
